Ledger Lane FAQ

Ledger Lane provides free calculators for loan payments, compound growth, inflation, bill splitting, savings goals, and retail pricing. Everything runs in your browser. These are educational estimates, not financial advice.

Is anything here financial advice?

No. These calculators show how standard formulas behave with the numbers you enter. They do not know your circumstances, obligations, tax position, or risk tolerance. Decisions about borrowing, investing, or saving should be made with a qualified adviser who can see your full situation.

Does the loan calculator include fees and insurance?

No. It models principal and interest for a fixed-rate, fully amortising loan with equal monthly payments. Origination fees, arrangement charges, mandatory insurance, and taxes are quoted separately by lenders and will raise the real cost. Compare the annualised rate including fees that lenders are required to disclose in most jurisdictions.

Why does a longer term cost so much more?

Interest accrues on the outstanding balance for every month the loan is open. Extending the term lowers each payment but increases the number of months interest is charged, so the total repaid rises even though the monthly figure looks easier. Always read the monthly payment and the total cost together.

Are the compound interest projections a prediction?

No. The projection assumes a single constant rate of return and contributions that are never missed. Real markets rise and fall, and sequence of returns matters as much as the average. Run a pessimistic, a middle, and an optimistic rate, and treat the spread between them as the honest answer.

Which inflation rate should I enter?

For a general answer, use the published consumer price index for your country. Official inflation measures a fixed national basket that may not resemble your spending — if housing, energy, or education dominate your budget, your experienced rate can differ substantially. Running more than one rate is more useful than trusting a single figure.

Should tip be calculated before or after tax?

Conventions differ by country and by venue. The bill split calculator applies the tip percentage to the amount you enter, so decide locally and enter the base your group agreed on. Where orders were very uneven, agree the adjustment first and split evenly only what was genuinely shared.

Do stacked discounts add together?

No. Sequential percentages multiply. Two consecutive 20% reductions leave 64% of the original price — a 36% total discount, not 40%. The discount and tax calculator applies the discount before tax, which is the usual retail order, then adds tax to the reduced amount.

Is any of my data stored?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser. Amounts, rates, and dates are never transmitted to a server, never logged, and are gone when you close the tab.
